about

Notes #1
My notebook's final page, inside back cover and three loose leaves are the only physical notes detailing the recordings herein. The scrawl is a sharp contrast with the chronicles diarising the previous six albums, especially the tetralogy of audio sketches 'afk', 'Alibis & Accidents', 'AUX' and 'Arrival' (music, lyrics, timings, studio settings and observations make up this messily meticulous memorandum). The more recent jottings are minimal mainly because the modus operandi of 'Audio In Colour' follows directly on from 'Arcade City' and its sister 'Amphibious Landing Craft' (although these, too, are well-represented in my journal with more succinct yet detailed notes). I say "follows directly on" inasmuch as we are, again, dealing with an almost entirely spontaneous aesthetic recorded in as few takes as possible. Notwithstanding a couple of titles and a single riff which were slightly more evolved, the material here, from rhythm and music to lyrics and arrangement, was created once the recording studio lights were on. All but one track were mixed and mastered once only in a further attempt to capture the essence of the moment. In so many ways January seems the darkest month and I hope the lights which brightened the studio still shine in these recordings, illuminating the audio in colour.

Notes #2
Equipment-wise, this is a completely different effects set-up to the pedalboard used for 'Amphibious Landing Craft' and 'Arcade City' (and 'afk' and 'Alibis & Accidents, for the matter of that). This album - whilst started on the old and valued yet now somewhat underused Epiphone 335 - soon saw a return to the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar for the bulk of guitar duties, with the DeArmond JetStar used almost exclusively on 'Amphibious Landing Craft' and 'Arcade City' deployed on just one track. Bass on those albums was performed entirely on a 24-fret Washburn but here we return to the short-scale Epiphone EB-0 used for 'afk' and 'Alibis & Accidents'. Pedals used on 'Audio In Colour' were BOSS SY1 Synthesizer, DS-2 Turbo Distortion, PS-6 Harmonist, DD-7 Digital Delay, Marshall RG-1 Regenerator and RF-1 Reflector.
